The Buddy List that displays all of the buddies on all of the accounts you are currently logged into. By default, this list is displayed on the right side of the interface, but it can be moved, resized, and minimized in a manner similar to a window on a computer desktop.
Meebo Messenger will sort and display your buddies using the following guidelines:
- Any friends who are offline will be under the Offline group at the bottom of your Buddy List. You can see what group this buddy will appear in when online by hovering over them and reading the Group field in the popup tooltip.
Buddies who have set their presence to
Away will be italicized, and their IM network logo will display the
Away badge.
- Some networks allow you to sort your friends into different groups. If you have placed your friends under different groups in these networks, you will see these groups and any online friends in them in the Buddy List.
- By default, online Facebook friends will be in the Facebook group. If you have sorted your Facebook friends into groups using Facebook, these groups will appear in your Buddy List.
- By default, any online buddies other than Facebook buddies will be in the Buddies group.
Working with the Buddy List
From the Buddy List you can:
- Start a conversation with a buddy by double-clicking them to open a conversation window. See Managing Conversations for more information.
- Remove and block buddies. See Removing and Blocking Buddies
Start a conversation with someone who is not in your Buddy List by clicking the IM Anyone button at the top of the Buddy List. A popup window will prompt you for the account you want to use and the name of the buddy you want to start a conversation with. Enter this information and click IM Buddy to open a conversation window.
Start a group chat. Click the Group Chat button to open the Group Chat window. Enter the IM account you will use to start the chat and the name of the group chat and click Join Chat. A group chat window will open as described in Managing Conversations. Note that you will only have the option to start a group chat with an account on an IM network that supports group chat.
- See additional information about a buddy by hovering your mouse cursor over him or her. A tooltip window will pop-up showing additional information about this buddy. The exact nature of the information depends on the network they are on.
Search for a buddy by entering the first few letters of their name into the search field at the top of the Buddy List. The list will automatically be filtered to show only buddies whose name contains the text you entered.
Working with Buddy Groups
Your buddies are organized into groups as described above. You can create, delete, organize, and sort buddies within groups as described below:
- Rename a buddy or group by right-clicking the buddy or group, selecting Rename (buddy/group name), and entering the new name. This allows you modify how the buddy is displayed in your list in case their user name is vague (e.g. you can change "SuperAwesomeGuy315" to "John Smith"). You can see the original buddy name by hovering over the buddy to display additional information as described above.
- Move a buddy to a different group by dragging them to the new group. The buddy will disappear from the group they used to be in and appear in the new one. You can see what group an offline buddy is in by hovering over them to see more information. Note that Facebook buddies cannot be moved - their grouping as determined by Facebook as described above.
- Create a new group by right-clicking an existing group and selecting Add New Group from the drop-down menu. You will be prompted for a name for the new group.
- Change how the Buddy List is sorted by right clicking on a group name and selecting one of the three Sort Buddylist by... options from the drop-down menu. This will change how buddies are sorted within all groups, not just the one you right-clicked. Buddies can be sorted by:
Name - Each group will be sorted by the first letter in their name as seen in the Buddy List. If you rename a buddy (as described above), this may change where they appear when the group is sorted by name.
Status - Each group will be sorted by presence.
Available buddies will appear before
Away buddies.
Invisible buddies will still appear in the Offline buddy group.
Network - Each group will be sorted by network. The networks will be sorted alphabetically, and your buddies will be sorted alphabetically within a given network.
