Viewing your Buddies' Presence and Status

Your buddies will show up differently in the Buddies tab depending on their Presence and Status. Presence indicates whether your buddy is currently available to chat. Status is a brief message that your buddy can set so others will know what he or she is up to. For more information on setting your own presence and status using the Meebo app, see Changing your Status and Presence.

Buddy Presence

Many IM networks allow users to select a presence indicating their availability. Different networks have different settings, but the Meebo app recognizes three presences and displays your buddy differently depending on how his or her presence is set:

  • Available - This presence indicates that your buddy is available and ready to chat. An available buddy's name will appear in regular text in your buddy list.
  • Away - This presence indicates that your buddy is logged in, but away from his or her computer or otherwise busy. An away buddy's name will appear italicized in your buddy list and you will see the Away badge on his or her icon.

Some networks will put a user into this presence automatically if they have been idle for a certain length of time, while on other networks, a user will have to put themselves into this presence explicitly.
  • Offline - This presence indicates that your buddy is not logged in. An offline buddy will be moved to the Offline buddy group and their icon and name will be grayed out.

Buddy Status

Many IM networks or social networks allow users to enter a brief status. You can see a buddy's status directly underneath his or her name.
