Push Notifications

What are push notifications?

Push notifications allow an iPhone or an iPod touch to receive incoming messages for applications that are not currently open. For the Meebo app, this means that you can receive and be notified of incoming chats even when the app is closed.

What if the Meebo app is not open when someone tries to chat with me?

If your receive a message when the Meebo app is not open, Meebo will use push messaging to tell you that you have received a message. Your iPhone or iPod touch will display an alert and give you the option to open the Meebo app immediately by tapping View. Note that if using the iPod touch you must be connected to a WiFi network to send and receive messages (see Connecting with the iPod touch for more information).

If you choose not to open the Meebo app immediately, the Meebo icon for on the iPhone menu will display a badge showing how many messages you have missed since the last time you opened it.

Enabling and disabling push notifications

By default, push notifications should be enabled on your iPhone or iPod touch. You can turn push notifications on and off by opening Settings>Notifications>Meebo from your iPhone or iPod touch's home page. This will open the Meebo notifications screen in which you can configure whether incoming notifications will cause:

  • Sounds - If this option is set to ON, your iPhone/iPod touch will beep when it receives a Meebo push notification (if your iPhone/iPod touch is set to silent mode, it may vibrate instead).
  • Alerts - If this option is set to ON, your iPhone/iPod touch will display an alert (as shown above) when it receives a push notification.
  • Badges - If this option is set to ON, the Meebo icon on your iPhone/iPod touch home page will display a badge indicating how many unread messages you have in Meebo.

Other ways that push notifications can be disabled

In addition to being manually disabled as described above, push notifications can also be disabled if:

  • You are signed off of the Meebo app as described in Signing On and Off
  • You are signed on from multiple locations (i.e. both on your iPhone and on a desktop computer). This is to prevent you from getting extraneous notifications while you are sitting in front of your computer. If you close all other Meebo sessions or if you are idle on your computer for more than 15 minutes, push notifications will be restored.
  • Your iPhone or iPod touch is not receiving service. For the iPhone, this could mean you are out of cellular service range. For the iPod touch, this means you are not currently connected to an active WiFi network. See Connecting with the iPod touch for more information.
