Starting and Managing Chats

Starting a chat

There are two ways to start a chat. You can start a chat with someone who is already on your buddies list, or you can start a chat with someone whose chat ID you know on one of your available networks.

To start a chat with an existing buddy:

  1. Tap Buddies on the bottom toolbar.
  2. Tap the buddy with whom you want to have a conversation.
The chat screen opens with your buddy's name at the top.
  3. Tap the text bar at the bottom of the screen to pop up a keyboard.
Type a message and tap Send in the lower right hand corner to send it. The conversation will appear in dialog bubbles from the side of the screen. Your text will come from the right, and your buddy’s text will come from the left.

You can scroll up to see earlier parts of the conversation.

To start a chat with anyone whose IM account name you know, but who is not necessarily your buddy:

  1. Tap Chats on the bottom toolbar, then tap the + icon in the upper-right corner. The Add Chat screen opens.
  2. Choose the IM network of the person you want to chat with by tapping Account and scrolling to the account you will use to chat with them.
  3. Enter the ID of the person you want to chat with by tapping Buddy id and using the keypad to enter their name.
  4. Tap Start Chat to open the chat. Note that no verification of the Buddy id will be done.

Receiving a chat

If the Meebo app is open, you will receive a notification in the form of a buzz or a beep (depending on how your iPhone is configured). In addition, the Chats button on the bottom toolbar will display a badge showing how many messages you have not yet read.

Tap Chats to see a list of unread conversations.

Each chat shows the most recent message plus the number of unread messages in the conversation. Tap a conversation to open it and respond.

Swapping between chats

While you are in a chat you can browse you other open chats by swiping left and right. The chats are displayed in order of how long ago they were started, with the most recently started chat on the far right. In this manner you can quickly browse through all of your open chats.

When you have a chat open without the keyboard opened, you can see a visual summary of you open chats at the bottom of the screen. Each open chat is represented by a chat bubble. The dark blue chat bubble indicates the currently open conversation, a red chat bubble indicates a chat with an unread message, and a light blue chat bubble indicates a chat with no unread messages.

Closing a chat

All of your chats will remain open in the Chats tab, allowing you to easily continue or reference your recent chats. Once you are done with a chat, you can close it. See Viewing and Searching Chat History for information on how to view and search closed chats. You can close a chat in one of three ways:

  • Tap Close in the upper-right corner of an open chat window.
  • In the Chats tab, swipe from left to right across a chat, and then tap the red Close button that appears.
  • In the Chats tab, tap the Edit button in the upper-right corner, then tap the red circle to the left of your buddy's icon to cause the red Close button to appear on the chat, then tap that button.
